How to remove subtitles from a video

    Preliminary information

Before getting to the heart of the subject, going to find out how to remove subtitles from a video, it is necessary to make some clarifications in this regard. Not all subtitles are the same: in some cases they are added to the video file such as dedicated tracks (hence, technically, as separate files within a video container, which can be MP4, MKV etc.), while in other cases they are impressed directly on the movie.

In the first case, the video is presented in a container format. If you were not aware of it, containers are container file formats that include everything related to a movie, so: the video itself, the audio, the codecs, the metadata, the menus and the subtitles. They can be easily distinguished by looking at the file extension. The most common video formats in this category are: MKV, AVI, MP4, VOB and MOV.

When you find yourself having to deal with files of this type, you can proceed with the removal of subtitles by taking advantage of the functions offered directly by the video players or by programs for editing and talking about movies.

When, on the other he, the reference file is not of the container type, but the subtitles are still visible when playing the video, these are “printed” directly on the movie. They have therefore been added using video editors and can be removed only and exclusively by using dedicated plugins or by cutting the part of the movie in which they are placed, using special software.

As can be guessed, in this second case the operation is not very practical and the final reont returned may not be optimal, but, unfortunately, it represents the only possible solution.

How to remove subtitles from a computer video

Having made the necessary clarifications above, let's get to the real heart of the matter and let's find out, together, how to remove subtitles from a video. Below you will find those that, in my humble opinion, represent the best programs to do so, going to act on the movies to which subtitles have been added as separate tracks (therefore as a separate file).

It allows you to remove subtitle tracks, but it requires recompression of the output files, so it is quite slow in providing the output file e, above all, it can degrade the quality of the starting videos (each conversion, in fact, generates a minimum of loss in video quality).

That said, HeBrake is free, open source, and agolable for Windows and macOS. To download it to your computer, visit the program's website and click on the button Download HeBrake.

To find out which programs to use and how to do it, read on.

Avidemux (Windows / macOS / Linux)

The first of the useful tools to remove subtitles imprinted on a video that I recommend you consider is Avidemux. HeBrake, the program for Windows and MacOS of which I told you in the passage in the initial part of the tutorial, it can also be used to crop the part of the video where the subtitles are imprinted. To do this, start the software, drag the reference video over it, click on the button Presets located at the top right and select a conversion profile from those listed.

Then select the tab Dimensions placed in the central part of the window, choose the option Custom below the item Cropping and indicate how much you want to cut the top, bottom and sides of the video by filling in the fields Top, Bottom, Left and Right. VirtualDubMod (Windows)

Stai using a PC with your installato Windows, even for what concerns the removal of subtitles imprinted on a video you can rely on the use of VirtualDubMod the software I told you about in the step at the beginning of the guide. How? I'll explain it to you right away.

First, download the additional plugin named MSU Subtitles Removal by going to the relevant website, scrolling to the bottom of the displayed page and clicking on the item Unpack this file in VirtualDub “Plugins” folder. File size ~150 KB (in ZIP). When the download is complete, extract theZIP archive obtained in the folder plugins located in the folder of VirtualDubMod.

Now, start VirtualDubMod again, go to the menu Video and select the wording Filters. Nella finestra che si apre, click on your button Add, double-click on the first entry MSU Subtitle Remover and click on the button OK per due turn consecutive.

At this point, all you have to do is save the changes by clicking on OK twice consecutively and save your video without subtitles by selecting the item Save as from the menu Fillet by VirtualDubMod. In this case, you have to re-encode the movie, so go to the menu Video, select the voice Compression and choose the codec you want to use for the operation (eg. XviD, DivX, etc.).

As an alternative to the procedure I just indicated, you can remove the subtitles from the movie by cutting the portion of the video in which they are imprinted. To do this, after opening the video file, go to the menu Video > Filtersclick on your bottone Add, select the filter null transform from the list on the left in the new window displayed and press the button OK.

Then proceed to save the edited video as I indicated earlier and that's it. As can be easily understood, the use of filters makes it meatory to re-encode the video.

How to remove subtitles from a video from smartphones and tablets

Removing subtitles is also feasible from smartphones and tablets. To be precise, if what you want to act on is a video file that contains subtitles as a separate track, you can do it by resorting to the use of VLC, the media player for Windows and macOS that I told you about in the step at the beginning of the guide which, perhaps not everyone knows, is also agolable in the form of an app for Android and iOS.

So, first download VLC to your device. If you are using Android, visit the relevant section of the Play Store and press the button Install. Stai using iOS, open the video file of your interest using a File Manager or through theWhatsapp where it is saved, press onicon della sharing (Quella with the rectangle and the arrow) and select l 'VLC icon from the menu that appears. If the video file of your interest has the subtitles imprinted, in order to remove them, the only solution is to "crop" the movie. Unlike what is possible to do by acting as a computer, as I indicated in the step dedicated to the thing, from mobile the operation turns out to be a little less practical but, however, not impossible. If you want to try your he, then, you can download and use one of the video editing apps that I suggested in my specific guides on how to cut a video on Android and how to cut a video on iPhone (also valid for iPad, to the detriment of the title ).
